About this tool
Grade point average is the weighted mean of your grades. Each grade is turned into points, multiplied by the course credits, and the total is divided by the total credits. A 3-credit A counts three times as much as a 1-credit A.
This calculator uses the common 4.0 scale: A and A+ are 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3 and so on down to F at 0. Honors courses add 0.5 and AP or IB courses add 1.0 to a passing grade for a weighted GPA. Some schools cap or scale this differently.
To see how a new term changes your overall result, enter your previous cumulative GPA and the credits you have earned. Official GPA is calculated by your school, so use this for planning and not for applications. Nothing you type is saved or sent.
Questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course grade points by its credits, add them, and divide by the total credits.
What is a weighted GPA?
A GPA that gives extra points for harder courses such as honors and AP, so it can be above 4.0.
Does an F count as zero?
Yes. An F is zero points but its credits still count in the divisor, so it lowers your GPA. Weighting is not added to an F.
Is it the same as my school official GPA?
Not always. Schools use their own scales, rounding and rules, so treat this as an estimate.
