About this tool

A hash is a short fingerprint of data. If one byte changes, the hash changes completely, so hashes are used to check that a download is not damaged or altered.

The hashes are calculated by your browser. A file is read on your device and is not uploaded. MD5 is not offered because browsers do not include it.

Questions

How do I check a download?

Hash the file here and compare the result with the SHA-256 on the vendor page. They must be identical.

Can I store passwords with SHA-256?

No. Use a slow password hashing method such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 with a salt.

Why no MD5?

The browser crypto tools do not include MD5, and MD5 is no longer considered safe for security use.

Is the file uploaded?

No. It is read and hashed on your device.
