About this tool

Prices are shown with tax in some countries and without it in others. This calculator converts between the two. To add tax, it multiplies the price by the rate. To remove tax, it divides the total by one plus the rate, which is different from just subtracting a percentage.

For example, a total of 120.00 that includes 20% VAT is 100.00 plus 20.00 of tax, not 96.00. Presets are provided for UK VAT, Australian GST, Canadian GST and HST, and Pakistan sales tax. For US states and cities, rates differ by location, so use Other and enter your local rate.

Rates and rules change, and some goods are zero-rated or exempt. Treat the result as a guide and check the current rate with the tax authority in your country. The calculation happens in your browser.

Questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Choose "Remove tax" and enter the total. The price without tax is the total divided by 1 plus the rate; for 20% divide by 1.2.

What is the difference between VAT, GST and sales tax?

They are all taxes on spending. VAT and GST are charged at each step of the supply chain, while US sales tax is charged once to the final buyer. For the calculation the result is the same.

Which rate should I choose in Canada?

It depends on the province: GST 5% alone in Alberta, 13% HST in Ontario, 15% HST in the Atlantic provinces, and so on.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is a calculator. Confirm rates and rules with your tax authority or accountant.
