About this tool

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. The format makes small files, but Windows, many websites, job portals and older programs cannot open it. Converting to JPG gives you a picture that works everywhere.

The converter reads the HEIC file in your browser and saves a normal JPG or PNG. Nothing is sent to a server, so personal photos, documents and ID cards stay on your device. The first conversion loads the decoder, which is a little over one megabyte.

Some HEIC files hold several images, such as a live photo burst; these are saved as numbered files. A JPG is always a little lossy, so choose PNG if you need no further loss, and keep the original HEIC if you may edit the photo later.

Questions

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is the picture format iPhones and recent iPads use by default. It keeps the same quality as JPG at about half the size, but not every program can open it.

Can I stop my iPhone saving HEIC?

Yes. In Settings, Camera, Formats, choose Most Compatible and new photos will be JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC and can be converted here.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, so the photos never leave your phone or computer.

Does converting reduce the quality?

JPG is lossy, so there is a very small loss at 90% quality that is hard to see. Choose PNG to avoid it, but PNG files are much larger.
