How to use it

  1. Step 1

Choose your pictures or drag them into the box.

  2. Step 2

Choose JPG or WebP, then set the quality. 60% to 80% is usually hard to tell apart from the original.

  3. Step 3

Optionally limit the width. Phone photos are often far larger than any screen needs.

  4. Step 4

Press Compress and compare the sizes. Download one file or all as a ZIP.

About this tool

Large photos are slow to upload and are often rejected by online forms with a size limit. Compressing re-saves the picture with a little less detail that the eye rarely notices, which can cut the file to a fifth of its size or less.

Two things reduce size: lower quality, and fewer pixels. Reducing the width to 1280 or 1920 pixels is often enough for websites and chat apps, and it works together with the quality setting.

Compression here is lossy, so keep your original if you may need it later. If a result is not smaller, the original was already well optimised; try a lower quality or a smaller width.

Questions

How much smaller will my photo become?

It depends on the picture. Phone photos often shrink by 60% to 90%. Pictures that are already compressed shrink less.

Will the quality look worse?

At around 70% quality most people see no difference on a screen. Lower values show blurring around edges.

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. Compression runs in your browser and the files never leave your device.

Why is the output sometimes bigger than the original?

If the source was already compressed hard, re-saving can add size. Lower the quality or reduce the width.
