About this tool
A UUID, called a GUID in .NET and SQL Server, is a 128-bit identifier. Version 4 UUIDs are random, so two systems can create them independently with a practically zero chance of a clash.
They come from the secure random generator of your browser. Nothing is stored or sent to a server.
Questions
Is a UUID the same as a GUID?
Yes. GUID is the Microsoft name. The braces option gives the form often seen in Windows and .NET.
Can two UUIDs ever be the same?
It is possible in theory but so unlikely that it is ignored in practice.
Can I use them as database keys?
Yes. Random UUIDs spread inserts across an index, which can slow a clustered index on a big SQL Server table. Think about sequential IDs for very large tables.
Which version are they?
Version 4 (random).
